What might cause the top seal or sector shaft to leak?

ZF steering boxes:

The top seal in most ZF steering boxes cannot be changed without disassembling the unit. In most cases the valve assembly will be corroded and require specialised repair.Leaks from the sector shaft also require that the unit is stripped and specialised tools are needed for correct re-assembly. Both of these operations are best left to specialised repairers.

TRW steering boxes:

The top seal in most TRW units can be changed in situ. However, care is needed to do this. Trying to drill the old seal out is not recommended – if the housing or valve assembly are damaged by drilling, the unit is effectively rendered scrap. Sector shaft seals need the unit to be disassembled and it is best left to specialised repairers.

General steering problems:  Heavy Steering

Various reasons can lead to driver reports of heavy steering.

Faulty pump:

If the flow or pressure from the pump is low, more effort will be required to turn the wheel. If the steering goes lighter when the engine speed is increased it indicates a fault in the pump.

Worn king pins:

Tight or excessively worn king pins will cause the steering to become heavy. Check for free operation with the steering linkage disconnected.

Low tyre pressure:

Check and adjust accordingly.

Worn univeral joints:

Play in the universal joints in the linkage to the box can cause the steering to go tight. Lumpy steering can often be attributed to this also.

Other steering problems.

Steering does not return.

Faulty pump, tight king pins and steering geometry out of alignment.

Steering wanders or pulls to one side

If the steering geometry and tyre pressures are all correct a fault in the steering box is indicated. This will require specialised repair or an exchange unit.

Excessive play.

TRW units:
It may be possible to remove excessive play from the centre in TRW units by using the adjuster on the side cover. Screw this in until there is no free play in the center position.

Do not overtighten.

ZF units:
It is not possible to adjust these units without disassembly. This is best left to specialised repairers who will have the special tools required to adjust the bearings and check the float in the valve and piston assembly.
